Honouring Dr T K Padmanabhan for completing 50 years of practice in cancer treatment, Celebrated on 02/01/2017

Trivandrum Oncology Club whole heartedly rejoiced with Dr.TK Padmanabhan for completing 50 glorious years of practice in oncology. Our Club celebrated the remarkable milestone Dr T K Padmanabhan on 02/01/2017. Distinguished graduate of Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram and an eminent Professor of Radiation Oncology, held in high esteem by one and all, who ventured into the field of Radiation Oncology when it was in its infancy in the state of Kerala Compassionate physician, known for his simplicity, dedication and principled approach, who has generously given his time, energy, and expertise to improve the care of oncology patients and make a difference in the lives of many . Legendary teacher with extraordinary vision who initiated many grateful students into the art and science of Radiation Oncology and magnanimously nurtured the careers of his juniors in the field

 

About Dr TK Padmanabhan

Dr.T.K.Padmanabhan was born on 5th August 1941 in trivandrum to a middle class family.His father was a retired high school headmaster.  His school education was in Model school,Trivandrum. After completing BSc, joined for MBBS in Trivandrum Medical College in 1961. Completed house surgeoncy on 31st January and as asked by Prof. Thangavelu, joined as tutor in radiology on 1st Feb 1967. After working for 1 yr he joined for MD(Radiology )in King George Medical college, Lucknow.  After doing diploma and MD he came back to TVM Mediacal college and joined as tutor in radiology in Sept. 1970 . In Jan 1972 he went to Christie hosp and Holt radium inst, Manchester. he returned to India in July 1974 and joined as asst prof of radiology in Med, college Kottayam. Worked there till march 75. In march 1975 he was transferred to Calicut Med college and worked there till sept 1975. He came back to TVM in Oct 75 and in march 1976 was promoted as Assoc. professor of radiology.

 The department was officially separated into Radiotherapy and radiodiagnosis and I was promoted as Prof of radiotherpy in 1981. Dr.Padmanabhan took up a job 1990 as consultant in oncology and radiology with Saudi Arabia where he worked till 1993 in new cancer hospital as senior consultant in radiation oncology.He went to Chennai to meet chairman Dr.Pratap Reddy and decided to take up the job after taking voluntary retirement from govt service. Before permitting him to apply for voluntary retirement he was posted as Professor of gastroenterology in calicut medical college. He went to calicut with the order and met Dr. Varma who was principal. He requested Dr.Padmanabhan to join and continue so that he can allow him to work in radiotherapy on working arrangement. But he was wise enough not to accept the offer.

After the voluntary retirement in May 1993, he joined Apollo cancer hospital in Chennai as senior consultant.Probably the best period in his career.Apollo was the first corporate hospital to start a cancer hospital in corporate set up.It had the first 3D planning computer,first HDR remote afterloadin g brachytherapy machine,first radiosurgery unit in the country,first cyberknife.He left Apollo hospital to join AIMS in Kochi as Prof and HOD.One of the best radiation oncology centers in India.In 2008 he went back to Chennai for family reasons and worked in Apollo hospital when they installed cyberknife . After working for 1 yr, , joined as Hon senior consultant in Radiation oncology in KIMS hospital, Trivandrum in 2011 and is cotinuing till date.

Exactly 50 yrs ago from today he started his career  treating cancers with radiation and continues the same till date.

Son- Krishnan B  tech from IIT, Chennai, and PGDM, IIM, Calcutta, presently working with Infosys, London.Married,Wife Rashmi, housewife. 2 children.

Daughter-Sreeja  Msc Physics,BtechChemical Engg, BITS, Pilani, MS, PHd Nanophysics,Scientist, UNC,North Carolina.Husband Aravind.Assoc Professor,Gene Center, UNC, North Carolina, Have 2 children.

Daughter-Poornima, Msc, Medical Physics,Queensland University, Brisbane.Working as consultant in EPIC hospital systems, Deloitte.Hyderabad.Married. Husband-Adithya.MBA, Queensland University.working with Rockwell Collins as Director, HR.Asia Pacific.
