Dr. Pinku Mukherjee, Guest speaker

The guest speaker for the meeting was Dr. Pinku Mukherjee who is the Irwin Belk Endowed and Distinguished Professor for Cancer Research, and Chair of Biological Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Before joining UNC Charlotte in August of 2008, Dr. Mukherjee held faculty appointments at The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, Indiana University Medical School, and Pennsylvania State University. She completed her Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Immunology from The University of London in UK before relocating to the US. For the past 20+ years, Dr. Mukherjee’s research has been funded extensively (>$15MM) by federal and non-federal institutions such as the National Institute of Health - National Cancer Institute, Department of Defense, and the American Association of Cancer Research. Dr. Mukherjee is the sole inventor on >10 patents and ~>100 publications in scientific journals and proceedings. Her expertise is in the areas of tumor immunology, immunotherapy, and inflammation associated with epithelial cancers. Dr. Mukherjee is the co-founder and chief science officer of a UNC Charlotte biotech spin-off, OncoTAb Inc. that works towards improving the quality of cancer care and has commercialized a simple blood test to detect breast cancer early and accurately especially in women with dense breast tissue where mammograms may be inconclusive. Dr. Mukherjee is the recipient of major awards such as the UNC-O Max Gardner Award for the greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race, CIC Governor’s International Entrepreneur Award, INSIGHT IntoDiversity 2016 Inspiring Women in Stem Award, and the First Citizen’s Bank Award for outstanding scientific research in 2018.
